Saving images for the Web
I have saved the following image into two Web friendly formats, GIF and JPEG, to demonstrate subtle differences between them. For this particular image, both formats appeared to work fairly well, but you may be able to notice the very slight color variations. This is because GIF has a limited color palette. For example, the green in the tree displays slightly darker than in the JPEG image below. Also note that there is more detail in the underwing feather colors in the bottom JPEG image versus the GIF image. It is these subtleties that may make one format preferable over the other in specific scenarios. In general, though, GIF is usually preferred for banners and logo graphics. Typically, JPEG is better suited for displaying artwork and photographs.
