Firefox 4 and IE9 Betas

January 16, 2011

I have been using Microsoft's IE9 Internet browser for awhile now and have found it, though still in beta status, to be an overall good product on my Windows Vista and Windows 7 machines. Sites I access frequently have all functioned as I would expect them to. An additional plus is IE9 is better at standards compliance than the previous renditions of IE. This will be great for Web designers who will find they can eventually spend less time trying to figure out how to make their sites work in several competing browsers. IE9 is just a good all-around browser.

I also decided to check out Mozilla's progress on its Firefox 4 beta. The first thing I noticed was a similar look to the new IE9 interface. Everyone will still have their own personal preferences, so I will not go into a bunch of details comparing the two interfaces. At the same time, Firefox has (and still does) have a smoother implementation of the auto scroll feature. IE9's auto scroll is jerky and makes it harder on the eyes to see page details as it moves.

That does not mean that all is perfect in the Firefox 4 beta. I have run into some issues with menus created with Javascript that do not display correctly. I expect, though, issues like that will be solved by the time the final version is released.

If you would like to check them out for yourself, IE9 beta can be found at http://windows.microsoft.com/ie9 and Firefox 4 beta at http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/beta/.

Graphics Design Pages Added

December 15,2009 by Alan Wilcox

One of the classes I am currently taking deals mainly with Web graphics concepts and Adobe Photoshop. Those who have been to this site before will notice a big change in appearance. If you like the change, you can thank Kaplan University and the Web Graphics course I am taking. And, if you do not like the changes... well, you can blame the course again. ;-)

Go to my Graphics Portfolio to see what I am up to.

Google Chrome: Themed

October 5, 2009 by Alan Wilcox

I have used Google's Chrome browser before, but drawbacks were the inability to change its appearance and issues with some Web pages. I still see occasional rendering differences in pages, but Chrome generally loads pages quite fast. New, though, is a variety of themes that can be applied. It is possible, as more abilities to customize this browser are made available, this browser might offer some competition for Firefox. Find out more or download Google Chrome
